I never paid much attention to organic milk until I had children. The first time I went to the grocery store with intentions of buying organic milk was when my son had just finished breastfeeding and was ready to start drinking dairy milk. I reached in to pull out a carton and HOLY COW was the stuff expensive–twice as much as the non-organic variety! When he reached his second birthday, budget crunches hit the family and I went back to buying non-organic. I mean, a gallon of traditional milk was $3.00 and a HALF gallon of organic was $5.99! That’s the way things were until my daughter was born, who was diagnosed with cancer at 9 months old. When tragedy hits, one starts to rethink their lifestyle and the choices they make, so once again, I was buying organic milk, and still do today. When shopping, I look longingly at the non-organic milk and wonder, “Why is it so much cheaper?!?” I’ve asked that question a lot, but no one seems to know the answer. What is the difference between organic milk and regular milk?
The organic label actually refers to a way of growing and processing food that’s regulated and requires a special certification process. When you see the ‘certified organic’ label you can be sure that the food you’ve chosen was produced without the use of toxic, persistent pesticides or chemical fertilizers, which have been known to contaminate soil, air, drinking water and food. Organic farmers even feed their livestock only organic feed, hay and pasture – and they don’t use antibiotics or synthetic hormones. They keep their livestock healthy and productive through good nutrition and low-stress living conditions.
