After having the opportunity to screen We Bought a Zoo on the Fox Studios Lot, a film based on the true story of author Benjamin Mee’s book of the same title, Breezy Mama was treated to a group interview with screenwriter Aline Brosh-McKenna, also known for writing The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses and many more popular movies. As she sat at the front of the screening room, she gave the scoop on what it’s like to spend your days writing movies, whether she took some liberties with reality since the film is based on Mee’s raising kids/running a zoo/coping with the death of his wife, working with Matt Damon and more.
Where do you begin? I mean, you have the book and then where do you begin with writing the film?
Sometimes it’s not really that different from when you’re writing anything and when you’re telling your friend a story about like, “You’re not going to believe what happened yesterday.” You sort of innately pick the most salient detail.
