Supplements Women Need to Take After 40

August 4, 2014 By Chelsea

Leading up to turning 40 wasn’t fun but the celebration helped!

As if turning the big 4-0 wasn’t hard enough on me, I remember being at my Dr’s office and when she noticed my birth date, she explaimed, “Oh wow! It’s time for some testing.”

Next thing I knew, I was signing myself up for blood tests, mammograms and thyroid checks. Truth be told, once the results were back and I started taking the supplements suggested, it was as though someone turned the lights on! Breezy Mama turned to Dr. Diana Bitner of Spectrum Health Medical Group, Women’s Health Network, to find out common supplements most women need, why forty is a milestone birthday for needing extra testing and more.

Why do some doctors recommend women have their blood checked after 40? What are they looking for?

Routine health check-ups are being challenged by the new guidelines for [Read more…] about Supplements Women Need to Take After 40

June 30, 2014 By Alex

You’ve waited the long nine months to have your baby, but now that baby is here, you find that you’re not too excited. You’re not having the “love at first sight” feeling you’ve heard so much about, and you’re tired, tired, tired.  These could be signs of the after-baby blues and post-postpartum depression, both of which are more common than you think. Pamela Pimentel, RN and CEO of MOMS Orange County, gives us advice on how to get through it.

From Pamela:

You were tickled pink the first time you held your newborn baby, so why are you feeling so blue now?

Like most issues of anxiety and depression, postpartum depression is a topic many people do not want to discuss, yet it’s one of the most common complications of childbirth and can affect one in four new mothers anytime during their child’s first year of life, according to the report “Improving Maternal and Infant Mental Health: Focus on Maternal Depression.”

Postpartum depression may appear to be common baby blues at first, but if the signs are more intense and last longer than four to six weeks, mothers need to seek medical help promptly. According to the Mayo Clinic, the symptoms of clinically diagnosed postpartum depression can include [Read more…] about After-Baby Blues and Postpartum Depression: Solutions to Help

Cameron, me, Christopher and Curtis circa late 80’s.

The episode of LAST SEEN ALIVE following my brother Curtis and me working with a detective to find our missing brother Cameron Remmer airs on Discovery ID on Sunday, June 8 at 9/8c. Read on to watch a clip and for why we participated…

Every day my brother Cameron Remmer would call me. And my mom. And his dad. And my brother Christopher. And my brother Curtis. Sometimes more than once. Then, Cameron and I had a falling out. My intuition was telling me something was wrong with him after seeing some unusual behavior and I really wanted him to seek mental health. He wouldn’t. And I was [Read more…] about My Missing Brother: Preview of Show Airing June 8

Why Are My Periods So Heavy and Why Do I Bleed Between Periods?

Dr. Gafori is now taking YOUR questions! Email yours to: info@breezymama.com and it might be an upcoming post!

First you go nine months without a period. Then, if you breastfeed, aside from the initial bleeding after having a baby, you might get lucky to go a year or possibly more without a period!  So, when you get the “joy” of having it return, it can be some what of a shocker at just how much you, well, suddenly bleed. What’s with all the heavy bleeding? And, for some, why is there bleeding between periods? Breezy Mama turned to my favorite OB, Dr. Gafori, from IGO Medical Group, to get these questions answered.

Why do some women suffer from heavy bleeding?

Menorrhagia or heavy bleeding affects anywhere from 10-35 percent of women. It is one of the more common problems that leads to [Read more…] about Why Are My Periods So Heavy and Why Do I Bleed Between Periods?

Why Are My Allergies So Bad?

May 5, 2014 By Chelsea

It’s being called the “Pollen Vortex” of allergy seasons and we have the blood shot eyes and difficulty breathing to prove it (or is that just due to lack of sleep now that my twins are in “big girl” beds?). Breezy Mama turned to Dr. Jill Bryson, MD, primary care physician at Benton Family Clinic, to find out why this allergy season is particularly brutal, the symptoms that you have allergies and the safest treatments.

Why are allergies so bad for people this year?

There was an exceptionally harsh winter this year, with record-setting snowfall in some regions and extended below-freezing temperatures. This elongated winter meant late flowering for trees. As a result, [Read more…] about Why Are My Allergies So Bad?
