And Now Video Games Are Good For Kids???

April 8, 2015 By Chelsea

Can video games help kids learn

Here we are always doing our best to reduce “screen time” and then out comes a study from Brown University that says video games may speed up a player’s ability to learn. Truth be told, I often feel that I developed certain thinking and strategic skills from playing games myself as a child! Since I do prefer the kids being outdoors and exploring, I’ve kept that on the down low… until I saw this study! Breezy Mama had to get to the bottom of this and turned to Amanda Morin from Understood.org, an organization that helps the parents of children with learning and attention issues, to find out if video games can help kids learn.

Growing Pains–are they real?

March 30, 2015 By Alex

child-crying

It was Sunday evening when he started to complain. My son had played a soccer game on Saturday, a baseball game on Sunday, and we were driving home from a birthday party. “My leg, it hurts so bad!” he whimpered, “around my knee and thigh”. Knowing that it had been a long weekend, and that he was tired, I didn’t pay too much attention and told him he just needed some sleep. But you can imagine my guilt when he woke up crying at 11:00 PM, due to the pain in his leg. I gave him some Ibuprofen, an ice pack and some cuddles, and he eventually drifted back to sleep. But it got me thinking–was he experiencing growing pains (Something which I thought were a bit of a wives tale)? Breezy Mama turned to trusted pediatrician, Dr. Gillin for answers.

What are growing pains–do they really exist?

March 23, 2015 By Chelsea

Now that there’s T-K (transitional Kindergarten), pre-K (that parents opt for instead of a final year of preschool) AND preschool itself, which is better? And are the pre-K/T-K kids getting an advantage over preschoolers? Is there anything parents can do to help them catch up? Melissa Lowry, founder of www.melissa-lowry-education-coaching.com and of www.theanswerkeys.com, answered these Breezy Mama questions and more on whether or not to send your child to preschool or pre-K.

Are there advantages to pre-K and/or T-K?

The answer to this question depends on [Read more…] about Pre-K Versus Preschool – Which is Better?

Why are the Measles Back?

February 2, 2015 By Chelsea

Here in Southern California, we (well… most of us…) love our trips to Disneyland! To hear that a tragic US measles outbreak started as a result of someone with the highly contagious respiratory virus visiting the “Happiest Place on Earth” – contagious even if you are in the same room with the person – is of course awful news. But why is this disease that was at one point believed to be gone forever in the US back? And if your child has had only their first MMR, are they at risk? And do we moms/dads need to be re-vaccinated? Breezy Mama got these answers and more from our favorite go-to pediatrician, Dr. Gillin.

Why are measles back? I feel like it’s an old school concern but now there’s a major outbreak thanks to Disneyland visitors.

It’s due to international measles, gaps in vaccinations here, and the [Read more…] about Why are the Measles Back?
