Finding Your Child THAT Book; PLUS! Branches Books Giveaway!

October 29, 2015 By Alex

em reading

WIN!!!! Scholastic is giving away four of their most popular Branches books to one lucky reader–see how to enter below.

When my kiddos were little(r) I was dreaming of the day when I could tell them, “Go in your room and read for a bit.” Reading is wonderful in so many ways, but as a working mom who’s trying to get a gazillion things done, it’s also fantastic for using it to give  kids some downtime without having the TV on. As I’ve said before, my 10 year old son is hooked on reading, but my 6 year old daughter is still an emerging reader, so  we’ve been working hard on finding that certain book that “hooks” her. The Magic Treehouse series was great for my son, but my daughter has heard them already, and to be totally honest,  [Read more…] about Finding Your Child THAT Book; PLUS! Meet The Marvels — Brian Selznick’s New Novel

September 16, 2015 By Alex

My 9 year old is a reader–nothing makes me happier than seeing him curled up with a book. It reminds me of my younger self–I would lose myself in a book and wonder where the afternoon went. The only problem–I can’t keep up with him–I get him a book and he’s done with it a few days later. I’m always on the hunt for a new series, or a great recommendation, and I really wish that James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein would write a little faster. So when the opportunity came to take a look at Brian Selznick’s new book, The Marvels, I was intrigued. Neither my son nor I have ever read a Selzick novel (he’s the Caldecott Medal–winning creator of [Read more…] about Meet The Marvels — Brian Selznick’s New Novel

Amwell Lets You See the Doctor NOW

As I’ve mentioned before, I threw out my back this past January. It was awful–I was laid up for a week and it took a good solid month before I woke up without feeling any pain. During that first week I knew I had to go see a doctor, but I couldn’t move, let alone drive myself. The whole thing was terrible.

Fast forward to today, and I’ve been living life, exercising, etc, all normally until the last couple weeks when I started to feel a nagging pain around my lower back and hip joint. “UGH!” I thought, the last thing I wanted to do was throw out my back, but with crazy summer schedules, fitting a doctor’s appointment in just wasn’t in the cards.

And then I heard about Amwell, a service in which you can see board certified, licensed doctors immediately, day or night, on either your mobile device or desktop computer. Breezy Mama was invited to try the service, and I was all over it. After downloading and signing up, I was able to [Read more…] about Amwell Lets You See the Doctor NOW

Get those tangles out! Solutions for unruly hair

June 8, 2015 By Alex

A little bit of frizz, a little bit of curl, and a whole lot of hair.
A little bit of frizz, a little bit of curl, and a whole lot of hair.

When I was little, I had stick straight, thick hair that hung down my back. My mom would brush it in the morning and I remember crying, the brushing hurt so badly. Fast forward to today, and I find myself making my own daughter cry as I brush her hair. She has craaazy hair which is half curly, half straight and a whole lotta frizz. Taming the hair monster is no easy feat, but these products [Read more…] about Get those tangles out! Solutions for unruly hair

ScholarShare Makes Saving for College Easy

A classic from the photo album--Chelsea and me on college move-in day.
A classic from the photo album–Chelsea and me on college move-in day.

College–one of the best times of my life. It’s where I became independent, learned how to do laundry and to cook. It’s where I met my husband and learned that I couldn’t take a Scantron test if my life (or grade) depended upon it. My parents paid for me to go to school–their generosity being something I’ll never forget. If it wasn’t for them, I may not have been able to go (or had as much fun) because college is expensive!

My husband was lucky as well–his parents paid for his education and we both knew that when we had kids, we’d want to pay it forward and do the same for our children. But did I mention that college is expensive?! So after the birth of our first child, I gave myself the task of researching 529’s.

For those that don’t know, 529’s are [Read more…] about ScholarShare Makes Saving for College Easy
