Kids transportation one of the worst back to school challenges

Breezy Mama’s Lan has the scoop on the “uber” for kids -HopSkipDrive! From Lan:

With kids heading off to school and after school programs like math tutoring and sports, it’s been challenging keeping schedules straight and negotiating with the hubby who and how the kids will be taken to and from their various activities. Unfortunately, this has become the norm for most households as kids are juggling more and both parents are working.

HopSkipDrive, the ride share service geared towards transporting kids, released their first ever “State of Back to School Transportation in America” survey. Polling more than 1,000 working parents with children between the ages of 6 and 17, the study found that:

  • Almost half (47%) of parents say their work schedule has prevented their child from participating in an extracurricular activity.
  • 27% of parents feel like they have put their job at risk in order to meet their child’s transportation needs.
  • 35% of parents say managing their child’s school and extracurricular transportation arrangements is MORE stressful than filing their taxes.
  • 40% of parents say their work schedule is affected on at least a weekly basis because they need to drive a child to school or an extracurricular activity.
  • 44% of working parents spend 5 or more hours a week driving to and from school and/or extracurricular activities.

And like 20% of parents surveyed, my husband and I find managing a new transportation schedule the worst part of the back to school season.

No surprise then that services like HopSkipDrive has sprung up recently. Founded by working moms Joanna McFarland, Carolyn Yashari Becher and Janelle McGlothlin, HopSkipDrive has won over thousands of families in the LA, Orange County and San Francisco Bay area thanks to safety measures like background checks and fingerprinting of all CareDrivers and live customer service. Wish they would hurry up and launch in the NYC area!
