Breezy Mama New York Editor fills us in on the Broadway musical, Matilda.
Our family had a blast at the Broadway musical Matilda. Our 9-year-old daughter, Emma, loved it — she came out singing the rousing songs and wanting to see it again, and we were all blown away by the talented young star. There’s a lot of humor, impressive choreography and some very cool effects. But a few times during the show, Emma turned to us and whispered, “This is really dark” — and she’s right. It’s perfect for ages 8 and up, but it’s not a starter musical. The story (a gifted little girl does battle with her cruel, tyrannical teacher and emotionally abusive parents) can be grim, and the British accents make some of the lyrics tough to decipher. My recommendation (and my daughter’s): Read the Roald Dahl book first, and listen to some of the songs online. Then you’ll be prepared to enjoy one of the best family shows Broadway has to offer.
