How to Co-Parent When Your Ex-Husband is a Jerk

Question of the day: They divorced for a reason. And now she must share parenting with someone who is an unreasonable jerk? When the kids are at dad’s house, suddenly homework and even sports are out the window. What advice do you have for a woman who must co-parent with a complete jerk?

Kerri Zane, a single mom and author of It Takes All 5: A Single Mom’s Guide to Finding the REAL One, answers the question!

If your children’s father is not willing to support his children in completing their homework or getting them to their extra-curricular activities, you may want to suggest a custody arrangement shift with him. Volunteer to take the school nights. If he wants to be a weekend dad, so be it. Plus you’ll have a built in babysitter for Saturday night! If he is uncooperative about changing schedule, then I recommend you suggest a meeting with the teachers or coaches. Often when concerns or requirements, for your child’s education, comes from a third party the recommendation is better received.

Finally, and most importantly, no matter how much you think your former spouse is a “jerk,” do not share that sentiment with your kids. He is their dad and they love him. Take a deep breath and know that when they’re old enough, they will form their own judgements about him.
