My Bathing Suit Intervention

Don't panic -- this option is for rebels.

One of Breezy Mama’s favorite stylist’s Sami’s got TWENTY bathing suit options for mom figures. HINT: No tank-inis allowed. But first… when my friends gathered for my Bathing Suit Intervention.

The year was 2004 and I had just given birth to my first child. With the 50 pounds I gained fortunately melting off at a rapid pace, I did what any savvy woman would do when she needed a bathing suit while still overweight, but planning to lose it: buy a cheap suit from Target.

Flashforward to 2006, I still had about 10 pounds to lose after the birth of my second child and a girl’s weekend on the calendar. Again, being financially savvy (read: cheap), I just dusted off the original bathing suit I bought two years prior and packed it for our mom’s weekend away. It was then that my first Bathing Suit Intervention took place.

As we sat in the hot tub relaxing, no kids and enjoying ourselves, Alex could no longer hold it in: “That suit looks awful on you! It doesn’t even fit you and it’s coming apart at the seams!”

Danica quickly followed, “I am SO GLAD you said something, Alex! You just can’t wear that suit ever again, Chelsea!”

My only hope was Maya, who politely turned away when I looked in her direction. This was officially SERIOUS.

Once back in our hotel room, I was asked once and for all: WILL YOU BURN THAT THING?!

When I returned home, I informed the hubby of what had happened and his response was, “Thank goodness they told you. Will you burn it now?”

A couple weeks later after the FINAL intervention: Alex, Kelly, Danica, Maya and me.

FIVE years later, it was the summer of 2011 and my high school reunion was coming up and the girls and I reserved a hotel room as this would serve as our annual trip together. The night I was packing my husband came home from work and found me on my bedroom floor laughing hysterically.

“What’s so funny?” he asked with fear in his voice.

“Look what I’m going to pack for my girl’s trip weekend!”

“I THOUGHT YOU BURNED THAT?!?!?!”

With 15 pounds to lose after the birth of my twins, quite frankly I could either A. purchase a new suit (no way), B. wear a maternity suit (thought about it) or C. annoy my friends like you can’t imagine. Having the sense of humor that I do, I went with option C.

Things started out in our ocean front hotel room that we splurged on and Alex was still quoting the ridiculous price the rest of us had agreed on since she had been outvoted when originally pushing for a cheaper option. As I was bragging that I brought the best snacks and Danica came close to beating me with hers, I pulled out my Trump card: chocolate covered potato chips. This triumph instantly sent me into a choreographed victory dance which left Danica asking, “Is she okay?”

When I explained that it was my upcoming flash mob moves, everything (surprisingly) made sense to her again and I was soon teaching everyone the dance.

Then it came time to go down to the beach. I was giddy with joy! I couldn’t wait to torture my besties!!! Once on the sand, I took off my tank top and shorts when Danica gasped, “CHELSEA!?!?! HOW COULD YOU!?!?!?! Do you understand how many bathing suit interventions I have had BECAUSE OF THAT SUIT!”

Alex, who was standing angrily with one hand on her hip, shook her head in disbelief. “That is so not funny CHELSEA!”

Once again, Maya politely looked away. Then Maya mentioned that Sami had recently had a Bathing Suit Intervention with her… Maya was looking SMOKING HOT! She said she had an extra swimsuit in the car, and, me feeling fat and preferring to make a joke versus even bothering to try to pretend to look cute, declined.

Alex and Danica INSISTED I change. Truth be told, once I switched into Maya’s hip suit, I have never looked back. It’s amazing that there actually could be something that hides what needed to be hidden and still come off as though I wasn’t stuck in 2004.

It was that moment of self confidence IN A BATHING SUIT while 15 pounds over-weight that I knew we all could use Sami’s picks for 2012. And even if you already are hip, here are a few you can arm yourself with the next time you need to conduct an intervention.

From Sami:

Hooray for 2012 Swimwear!  Guaranteed you will find a style you like, from textured detail to prints, cutouts, fringe, bandeau, halter, asymmetrical neckline and my favorite RETRO — it’s all here… and it’s all about color, color, color!!!  So get out there and get yourself a suit that is flattering on your body, but also reflects your style. And remember, never is a tank-ini suitable!

Here’s some recommended websites and styles to get you started…

5. H&M

H&M is a great place to shop for a swimsuit, namely due to the price. A one or two piece suit will run you less than $30.00. I have always had great experiences with my H&M swimwear, always flattering cuts, well made and up to date trends … at these prices you could sport a new suit at every swimsuit outing!!!

Here are a few cute styles, but with H&M you just have to go see what your local store has available…

And just for fun and for those of you who can rock this style (not many of us), but if you happen to be a Brazilian swimsuit model, this suit gets my vote for swimsuit of the year 2012!!!

L*Space Swimwear

… and if not, here is a modified version that maybe some of us could pull off????

  1. LOVE this aricle! Thank you for the fun laughs this morning Chelsea! These swimsuits are fabulous, too!! I love that we were part of the swimsuit intervention…haha. Mine was painful but so glad I listened to Sami and found a fabulous suit that didn’t make me look like a grandma. Thanks for the awesome article Chelsea and Sami.

  2. Though I may have sounded mean, I was doing my bestie a favor–Chelsea looked as if she were wearing her grandpa’s underwear. She had an amazing body under those saggy see-through bottoms that needed to come OUT! I was in complete shock when she busted that “thing” out for our reunion. And between you and me, I bet she still has it tucked away somewhere.

As for not wanting to buy a suit because they were too expensive–no excuse because there are quite a few options. Like Sami said, H&M has adorable ones, as well as Old Navy, and I just bought one at Costco–a Roxy for $30.00! Also check out sample sales–great deals.

As for the suits shown above–Sami these are too die for!! So CUTE! I’ll see you at the beach with you in your fringe! 🙂

  3. Sami ROCKS! And thank you Maya! Of course I kept it, Alex… on one hand, I want to frame it. On the other, I want to torture you with it again when you least expect it (insert evil laugh). 🙂

  4. I can’t stop thinking about the fringe bikini!!! I think we should all get one for our next girl’s weekend!! Love you beautiful mamas:)
