Growing up, Valentine’s Day was always a big deal in my family. We’d have a “Valentine making party” and make Valentine’s for our classmates, have a special family dinner on February 14 and exchange gifts. I like to keep the tradition alive, and do this in my own family today. Though we make a big deal of the holiday, the gifts themselves are small and sweet. Here are some ideas for your own family. . .
For your significant other:
My husband gave this to me one Valentine’s Day long ago and it still gets ample play time. From Amazon: In keeping with the title, Love Songs captures Miles Davis at his romantic best. These cuts were culled from classic studio dates (and one concert) recorded between 1957 and 1964, and the intimate sound of Davis’s trumpet unifies the nine poignant ballads chosen for this loving compilation. . . .With tasteful accompaniment and wonderful compositions, this Miles Davis collection is straight from the heart. Oh my, these candies are SO addicting. It’s a good thing they come in individual packets or else you’d find yourself eating more than your share. The best part? The candy contains ingredients that are good for you–B vitamins to boost your energy, antioxidants to keep your immune system strong, and electrolytes to keep you hydrated. There’s a variety of flavors–caramel (my favorite), gum (my second favorite), tarts, jellybeans and gummies. To order Snap Infusion Candy, $23.88 for a box of 12, click here.
For the woman in your life:
Okay–I have never met a strapless bra that didn’t fall down. People have suggested their favorites, SWEARING that it required no tugging, but alas, they always fall down on me. So when I got an email telling me that I could say goodbye to tugging forever with Va Bien’s ultra-LiftTM Perfect Strapless Bra, I had to try it. I wore it out antiquing with my mom–in other words–we were walking all over the place. And did it fall? NO! My mom was so impressed she went right home to see whee she could get one for herself. I’ve since worn the bra out at night, dancing, walking–you name it–it stays in place! I’m in love! From the PR firm: . . .the ultra-LiftTM Perfect Strapless features the brand’s patented ultra-LiftTM technology: 3 hidden “stays” sealed between layers of foam in each bra cup to quite literally lift the bra, and hence the breasts. Think of the stays like corset boning, but hidden within a bra cup. An inner layer of strong powernet reinforces the bra back to support and keep the bra in place, while top and bottom elastics are treated with double silicone to reinforce gripping. To order Va Bien’s ultra-LiftTM Perfect Strapless Bra, $58.00, click here.
For your little reader:
My Monster Burrufu by Alberto Corral, is an endearing book about a little girl named Olivia, who moves to a new house, only to find a monster (a friendly monster!) named Burrufu living in her attic. I’ve been reading this book to my 6-year-old boy who loves it, and who looks forward to seeing what will happen to friendly pair that night. Be forewarned however, the book was a bit scary for my 3-year old. From Amazon: ‘My Monster Burrufu’ is a story of overcoming fear, a curse, and a most unusual monster who learns from a little girl how to trust his heart. To order My Monster Burrufu, $9.85, click here.
For the sports buff:

This CD had the kids and me stomping our feet, clapping our hands and dancing the afternoon away. Such a fun album. Bonus–it comes with a 16 page board book! From Amazon: Little Nut Tree is a return to the age-desegregated mixed musical bag approach that has earned Zanes his place at the forefront of the family music genre. Recorded at Zanes’ new homespun studio at Festival Five Records in Brooklyn, where friends and guests could visit to hang around and collaborate, the album features the multi-talented singer/violinist/whistler Andrew Bird on the original song I Don’t Need Sunny Skies; funk/soul singer Sharon Jones brought her powerful voice to play in a duet with Zanes on the Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto R&B classic Down in the Basement ; West African group the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars jam on the album s title track, a cover of the Melodians Little Nut Tree ; and Zanes long time friend Joan Osborne added her Kentucky voice to another original Everybody’s Going to be Happy.
