Sure Breezy Mama talks a lot about food snacks for kids, but this time we got Dr. Felicia D. Stoler, a registered dietician who hosted TLC’s groundbreaking series, Honey We’re Killing the Kids!!, to get her picks for the best foods for moms. From the healthy alternatives, how to portion control, mistakes to avoid to not gain weight and options for healthy chocolate, we got the dish.
What are your top 5 favorite snacks for women and why do you choose those?
Well, it depends on if one is a savory snacker or has a sweet tooth:
i. Corazonas chips (I am a huge savory snacker – the 4 cheese chips are my secret indulgence) – the tortilla & potato chips are amazing AND good for our hearts (helps to lower cholesterol)
ii. For the chocoholics – Vitalicous Chocolate/Pomegranate brownies (also with Corowise) or Vitatops
iii. Almonds (because we need something to fill us up
iv. Greek yogurt (so versatile & delicious)
v. Seasonal fruit
I’m always thinking about health with a little extra oomph… heart health – plant sterols, essential fatty acids, satiety (the fullness factor), fiber and most important – TASTE!
What is a good portion for a snack?
a. It depends on the food – so for fruit – it’s one piece or ½ cup of berries, ¼ cup dried.
b. Dairy (yogurt): 8 oz, 1 oz cheese, ½ cup cottage cheese
c. 24 almonds (think Altoids tin or traditional post-it note)
d. One ounce of chips (usually states the # on the portion size)
I always read the label (except for produce) to see what the portion size is… take it & then put the rest away.
What are common mistakes people make when snacking that can lead to weight gain?
a. Disregard portions & eat too much (mindless eating)
b. Think about snacks as “junk food” vs. whole foods – consider all the foods you need to eat in a day (from each of the food groups) & consider breaking those down into 3 meals & 3 snacks
c. People do not keep track of calories, eat for pleasure & don’t realize how much “extra” they may be eating.
d. People forget to count the calories in beverages – just b/c it’s liquid, it does count.
e. Eating in front of the TV (or at the movie theatre) & not paying attention to the amount of food/snacks being consumed.
What is a healthy way to get some chocolate in?
a. As I suggested, the Vitalicious products are great
b. Chocolate calcium or plant sterol chews
c. Chocolate milk
d. Skinny Cow Frozen desserts (or their new candy bars)
e. Chocolate covered almonds
f. Chocolate graham crackers
g. Chocolate covered pretzels
