Gone are the days when you can go to the store, pick a shampoo and conditioner off the shelf, and throw them in your basket without reading the ingredients. The majority of today’s products are filled with harsh toxins, the most recent of which is SLS. The Free Dictionary defines SLS as, “a caustic detergent useful for removing grease; although commonly included in personal care items (shampoos and toothpastes etc.) it can irritate skin and should not be swallowed.” Hmm, not something that you’d want to be slathering all over your body. But do you have the time to chase down every SLS free product out there? Probably not. So, Breezy Mama makes life, well a bit breezier, and does the job for you. Below are five shampoos and conditioners from brands that you may not have heard of–which makes them even more appealing. Each one has been tested by moi to make sure that they bring shiny, easy to comb through locks–that, coupled with a make you feel good that you’re doing something for the environment? Bring it on.
The Bumble Bee Studio’s Herbal Shampoo and Conditioner
I had a early flight to catch, which meant stumbling into the shower at 4:30 AM. As my tired body opened up the shampoo, I took one whiff and was instantly energized. Containing ingredients such as rosemary, peppermint, lavender and basil, this shampoo and conditioner smells like you just walked into a aromatherapy shop–revitalizing and awakening. Each product is handmade in small batches to ensure quality and freshness. No: SLS, artificial colors and fragrances. Herbal Shampoo and Conditioner, $14.00 each. Click here to order.
Belegenza ilLustrious Shampoo and Cleanser and RoMance Deep Conditioning Treatment
This duo is great for a clean start. The ilLustrious Shampoo and Cleanser removes residue off your hair and the RoMance Deep Conditioning Treatment softens your hair like no other. What I love about the conidtioner is that there is no need to leave it in for minutes on end, requiring you to get back in the shower; you apply it after drying your hair. What’s interesting is how Belegenza came around in the first place, “Due to skin damage and scarring from SLS to our hands in the salon industry, we made it our mission to make a shampoo and body wash that not only was safe, but was finer than the leading “snobby” brands on the salon shelves . . .” No: SLS, Paba, Silicone, Acrylate, Paraben, Phthalate, Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, SD Alcohol, Formaldehyde, Sodium Chloride. Belegenza ilLustrious Shampoo and Cleanser, $19.00 and RoMance Deep Conditioning Treatment, $32.00. Click here to order.
J.R.Watkins Daily Aloe and Green Tea Shampoo and Conditioner
Now I’m a sucker for anything vintage, shampoo and conditioner included (I mean, just look at these labels!) so I was very excited that not only do these cleaners work well, but they smell divine too. What exactly. . . I can’t put my finger on it. Something reminiscent of my youth, that brings a feeling of happiness all over. Seriously, I’m not joking with you. Anywho, this duo works fantastically well, and it’s such a smart brand–from the rectangular shape for easy storing to the soy-based printing processed label, to the recycled plastic, to of course, the all natural ingredients (they even say that it’s safe for aquatic life!). What’s not to love? No: Acrylate, Carbomer, Chemical Preservative, Chemical Sunscreen, DEA/TEA, Paraben, Petro Chemical, Phthalate, Polymer, Propylene Glycol, PVP, Quat, Silicone, Sulfate, Talc. J.R.Watkins Daily Aloe and Green Tea Shampoo and Conditioner, $9.99 each. Click here to order.
SanoBella Protecting Shampoo and Smoothing Conditioner
Produced by doTerra, a company known for it’s essential oils, they recently introduced this shampoo and conditioner. Perfect for those of you who color your hair, the shampoo contains botanical extracts which provide antioxidant protection against UV damage. Not to be left out, the conditioner is a combination of “conditioning emollients, essential oils, botanical extracts and natural proteins which seal cuticles against damage caused by water penetration to the hair shaft—reducing combing force and blow-dry time and increasing hair luminosity and shine.” How’s that for luxury in a bottle? SanoBella Protecting Shampoo, $26.00 and Smoothing Conditioner, $28.67. Click here to order.
Know! Daily Shampoo and Everyday Conditioner
This brand was featured on The View, and for good reason. The shampoo has a hint of citrus in it, and suds up really nicely (which I love). The conditioner was very smoothing, and made my hair easy to comb through. With hardly anything synthetic in it, it’s amazing that it can do all that. No: DEAs, Formaldehyde, Glycols, Parabens, PEGs, Petrochemicals, Phthalates, Silicones, Sulfates, Synthetic Colors, Synthetic Fragrance, TEAs. Know! Daily Shampoo and Everyday Conditioner, $18.00 each. Click here to order.
Beecology Natural Honey and Botanical Sulfate-Free Shampoo and All Natural Conditioner
I brought this duo on a recent trip to Hawaii, and boy am I glad I did. With the sun beating down and the ocean water drenching my hair, this shampoo and conditioner packed a punch. Smelling of honey, easy to comb through and leaving my locks with a perfect wave, I loved them both. No: Sulfates, Formaldehyde, Parabens. Beecology Natural Honey and Botanical Sulfate-Free Shampoo and All Natural Conditioner, $12.99 each. Click here to order.

Alex-
The hair of my youth has been replaced with color, ahem, enhancements, shall we say. So, I find it pretty dry and in need of some moisture. I have been on the hunt for some great organic products for quite some time that can quench my hair’s thirst. Would you say that one of these brands would fit that bill over another?
Jenn–I would go for the Beecology for daily, and then the Belegenza for deep cleaning. Happy washing!
