Breezy Mama sends our Queen of the Caboodle, a.k.a. our Beauty Editor Kelly, undercover for an investigative report on whether celebrity perfumes measure up or plain well stink (if only you could see how hard I am making myself laugh right now).
I am a sucker for celebrity endorsements. I believe I inherited the gene from my mother. It all started when I was about twelve with Suzanne Somers and the Thighmaster and continued into my adulthood. When my daughter was born and I was up in the middle of the night feeding her, I saw an infomercial for face cream that was created in France “exclusively” for a certain supermodel but now could ”be mine for 3 installments of $19.99”. I bought it (Just in case any of you had any question, my skin looks nothing like that supermodel). So when I was asked to road test a handful of celebrity fragrances I was all over it! Who doesn’t want to smell like Halle Berry or Jennifer Aniston? If I can’t have their trim thighs or clear skin, I at least want to smell like them! Here are my reviews:
Fancy by Jessica Simpson
Although Jessica has had some highs and lows in the public eye, the one thing the girl knows is shoes. She makes great, trendy, affordable shoes. So I was curious to see what she would do for a fragrance. Her fragrance for me was a little too frou-frou and, well…fancy. It is smells like you just stepped out of the shower and took a big ol’ powder puff and doused your entire body with talcum powder. It wasn’t BAD smelling, but it didn’t suggest in my opinion of even a hint of sexiness. If you are looking for a powder fresh smell, you may like it. In her defense, she does offer a Fancy Nights fragrance which is a little bolder and has some musky undertones.

Halle by Halle Berry
Halle’s perfume has been out for awhile and I had heard good things about it, so I decided to head to Walgreens (yes, you heard me right-Walgreens) to try it. At first spray, this fragrance smelled too fruity and sweet for my taste. But as it settled in on my pulse points, a sexy orient scent emerged. It has notes of bergamot, fressia and fig, pear blossom and cashmere musk. I got several compliments on it throughout the day. And best of all, it is more than affordable!

Kim Kardashian Fragrance
I was pleasantly surprised with this fragrance. As one would expect from Kim, it had sultry notes of musk, tuberose, jasmine and sandlewood, but still smelled young and fresh from the mandarin, honeysuckle and vanilla orchid. I could definitely see a city girl or a CEO of a company wearing this perfume. For my own taste it was a little too heavy for everyday, I prefer something a little lighter, but I would definitely wear it at night or going out.

Jennifer Aniston Fragrance
Does our BFF Jen do ANYTHING that we don’t love? Once again, our favorite Friend doesn’t disappoint! Let’s just start with the beautiful bottle the fragrance comes in which has an elegant curve of a wave on the bottom. A California native, Jen wanted to bring the nostalgia of her childhood into a bottle. Being a California girl myself, I was drawn to this scent. It is reminiscent of long, sunny days on the beach- salty air and tropical oils(I swear there is a drop of Coppertone in there!) with nights full of blooming jasmine. The only drawback is that it didn’t have superb staying power, but I actually see this as a plus because I thought it smelled better as it wore off a little. If you are not a fan of the “Island thing” then it may not be what you are looking for, but could be great to wear on a getaway to Hawaii!

Purr by Katy Perry
When I first put this on, it reminded of me of the (much too strong) perfume Poison I wore back in high school ( back when I was a “Teenage Dream”-sorry, I couldn’t help myself!). But as it melted into my skin, it was not nearly as strong. It brought back a little bit of nostalgia (but maybe that’s just me) which I found appealing. It has flirty notes of peach nectar and apple, with hints of jasmine, and rose and vanilla orchids. And the little purple kitty bottle it comes in is ADORABLE! It is worth giving it a sniff as you walk through the perfume aisle at Nordstrom.

Reb’l fleur by Rihanna
Just like the singer herself, the scent smelled sweet, spicy and exotic. It has tuberose and hibiscus notes with a splash of coconut water. It is supposed to “Invoke warm skin” and I think it does a pretty good job of that.

Growing up as an actress (appearing in several Barbie commercials, Charles in Charge, Highway to Heaven, Kids Incorporated, etc. and later in life in a Super Bowl commercial and a Ford commercial), Kelly was known as ‘Queen of the Caboodle’ for her ready-to-head -to-LA-for-an-audition tricks of the make-up trade.
Kelly is mother to Abigail, Marcus and Eli and lives with her husband Thadd in Long Beach, California. Although she is a beauty product junkie, you will most likely find her on any given day wearing no makeup, in her favorite pair of gray sweats, and yes, sporting a ponytail.
