When I was pregnant with my first child, I had a dream–a dream where my house was filled with the coolest, vintage inspired, toys. They’d be wooden, and there wouldn’t be any plastic or super bright colors to be seen. Well, as mothers, we all know how this dream ends. I woke up. And realized, that it was almost impossible to have a house free of super bright colored plastic toys. But, we can strive to achieve this goal, starting with the five wooden toys you see below. . . –Alex
Forest Threading Tree
What caught my eye about this threading toy is that it’s so involved. I like how you thread all of the pieces together to make an entire “scene” rather than just following dots on a card. It’s also a Parent’s Choice Award Winner as well as a Creative Child Toy of the Year Award Winner. Hmmm, can’t go wrong with a toy that’s received those kind of accolades. Forest Tree Threading Toy from Beleduc, $25.17. Click here to order.
Chunky Keys
Every teething baby has to have their set of keys, right? It’s a must in your child’s box of toys. Like the generic plastic ones, these hand-made ones from Etsy have varied ridges and nubs for extra good gumming. Hint–these would make a super cute package tie-on for a baby shower or newborn gift. Chunky Keys, $6.00. Click here to order.
Portable Kitchen
Take it from me, a owner of a very small house–the toy kitchen is great for both boys and girls of all ages, but the size of the usual ones can be a bit much. That’s why I loved this portable version–you’re able to put it out on the floor or up on a table, but it’s easy to put away and hide when you need some extra living room. Portable Kitchen from Land of Nod, $49.00. Click here to order.
Mod Toddler Rocking Horse
Every kid loves a good rocking horse, and the modern-ess of this one suits me well. Wooden? Check. Devoid of bright colors? Check. Still super fun for the kiddos? Check. Handmade in the US of A, you’ll feel good about buying it as well. Mod Toddler Rocking Horse, $65.00. Click here to order.
Stacking Tree
Who needs plastic rings when you can have a super cool stacking tree? Once mini-me finishes stacking all the “branches” you won’t feel the need to rush clean-up–it’s like having a new art piece in your home. Stacking Tree by Plan Toys, $20.00 at EcoMom. Click here to order.

Those chunky keys are awesome! I would just make sure that anything you get on Etsy has been treated/stained with something safe and non-toxic. Some people aren’t very careful about that.
