You Remember Her As Punky Brewster and Now…

March 19, 2009 By Chelsea

aboutus_familyWith the slogan, “Tree huggin with style,” there’s even more to love about Soleil Moon Frye (yeah, that’s Punky Brewster) and Paige Goldberg Tolmach’s The Little Seed boutique based in Los Angeles. Carrying eco-friendly and organic products, Breezy was way too excited to come across the Seahorse Fauna Long Sleeve Onesie and just had to find out more from the two mother entrepenuers.

How many kids do you each have?
Paige: I have a son, Jackson, 2, and Soleil has two daughters, Poet, 3, and baby Jagger.

We fell in love with your Seahorse Fauna Long Sleeve Onesie (not to mention the turtle, gorilla, zebra and more designs). Along with clothing, what other sorts of products can shoppers find from The Little Seed?

Paige: Everything from A to Z for baby and toddler – toys, bodycare, bottles, non-toxic feeding sets and nursery furniture, etc.

Soleil: We have an amazing assortment of eco goodies for the family. We really search the globe for the best products for our families and others. Everything is tested out on our little ones first.

For buyers on a budget, what do you recommend?
Paige: One great safe toy for baby – maybe a wooden rattle for $10 or an organic veggie teether for $8. These last forever and some can even become heirlooms.

Soleil: Under the Nile has great affordable stuff along with Plan Toys and others. I think two colored Intrax pencils and a Scoot truck make a great gift for under 10 dollars. I don’t think you need to spend a lot to get a piece of eco living. It has always been important to us to make it available to everyone.

Which are your favorites for gifts?
Paige: We like to give gifts that are necessities yet are completely original – like organic body creams and non toxic diaper rash pastes that only we have, organic onesies and sleep sacks, wooden toys, and organic sheet sets.

In addition to products being eco-friendly, what else inspires you when deciding which items to sell?

Paige: Our number one concern is toxicity, so everything in the store must be non-toxic. We will only buy products that we would have in our own homes so products must pass the Jackson, Poet, Jagger test first!

How are you balancing motherhood and business ownership?
Paige: Our families come before anything and we have each other’s backs on that. Our store was born from the love of our children so it has been a pretty smooth transition.

Do you bring your kids to work?
Paige: Last Friday, Jackson worked in the store all day long! He didn’t even want to nap; He just swept the floors and chatted with customers. He had the best time and I loved spending the entire day with him in that environment!

Soleil: I bring my little ones to the store all of the time. It is there favorite place to play. I love it when the kids say, ‘Mommy lets go to the store.’ That makes my day.

How have things been going with your store?
Paige: Amazing. Parents keep thanking us for opening a store where they could trust that everything on the shelves was safe for their babies and their homes. It was really an idea whose time had come.

Soleil: I am most excited about our little seed private label launching soon. I love everything we have; I am really into Kate Quinn, all of the teethers for Jagger and eco crafts for Poet right now.

What can we expect in the future from The Little Seed?

Paige: Our own private label clothing line is just the beginning. We have so many great product ideas and we want to fill the store and our website with all of them so a safe lifestyle can be accessible to all parents. After all, a little eco goes a long way.
