Today’s Kindergarten: Will Your Child Be Ready?

Back in MY day (ahem) Kindergarten was a time to learn to sit still and homework meant remembering a change of clothes in case of an “accident.” As my five-year-old preps for the big leagues, I am stressed about what’s expected of her in these homework heavy days. Along with my own concerns, Breezy Mama Susie’s 3 1/2 year old’s birthday falls on a tricky fall date, which, for her, begs the question: to start Kindergarten earlier or wait until the year after. And, in general, no matter a child’s birth date, how do we know when they are ready to be sent off to the wild, er, start elementary school? Videos for Kids–Three Underground Favorites

My son wakes up early. No, seriously, I mean EARLY. When he was about one and a half, he went through a phase where he was up for the day at 4:00 AM. Yes, we tried everything to keep him in bed, but, unfortunately for us, he takes after me and really loves the morning time. For awhile, I tried to be a good parent and play with him when he got up—read books, stack blocks, do puzzles—those sorts of things. Then, after about a month, (and a lot of coffee) I threw in the towel and turned on the TV. But here’s the deal–we don’t have a DVR, and we only subscribe to basic cable. So what does this mean? We have a pretty extensive video collection. Here are three that you may not know about. –Alex

My son stayed with them for a weekend, and she had checked out some videos from the library, Max & Ruby being one of them. She said it was like magic dust—he became transfixed and all he wanted was more Max & Ruby.
