The flower that saved the day?

It happened innocently enough–as I walked my daughter in to preschool one morning, I saw the Teddy Bear activities that were planned and my heart dropped. We walk in the classroom and I see Emily’s classmates showing one another their stuffed animals. I ask her teacher, “Is today the Teddy Bear picnic?” “Yes”, she replies, “Why?”

I had forgotten and there really wasn’t an excuse on why. This was the 4th time one of my children had done the preschool’s Teddy Bear picnic, so I knew the drill–bring a snack in a sack lunch and a stuffed animal. Kids parade through the school, with their stuffed animal, and then “picnic” after. My daughter’s beloved teacher saw the panic in my eyes–”It’s okay if you forgot. Is Your Child Switching Schools? Here’s How to Make It Easier

My husband and I love the area that I grew up in, and have always talked about moving back. But now that our eldest has entered elementary school, the thought of having him switch schools tugs at my heartstrings. Is it really that bad? Or can a kid handle it much easier than we think? Although we’re currently not going anywhere, many parents do have to move, or place their child in a new school for a variety of reasons. If this is you make sure to read on because Breezy Mama turned to Jennifer Little, Ph.D of Parents Teach Kids for advice on how to handle the transition.

For these questions, please keep in mind that we are talking kindergarten through 5th grade. I imagine that once we get into Junior High and High School, the advice would change. Am I correct on that?

Not really – still the same process of change. The older students would be more independent and that usually means they would find more ways of getting into trouble on their own, as they might be more gullible when meeting potential friends in the neighborhood. Listen, I make no secret about the fact that I like to be treated well on the most important day of the year: Mother’s Day. It’s not that I have high expectations, but I do hope to be greeted with a Happy Mother’s Day by each family member… and perhaps a mocha.

This year went above and beyond that when the Sheraton Carlsbad hosted my family and me for a one-night stay in one of their amazing, ocean view suites! Who knew a hotel room could fit my family…. Kidding… kind of. Plus, we also got to enjoy Legoland through their “secret” hotel entrance!

One of the hardest parts for me after a day at an amusement park is trying to get my tired kids into the car, the drive home from there and then into bed. My new obsession after an amazing staycation at The Sheraton in Carlsbad is the “secret” passage from the hotel to Legoland park!

After a day of laughing on the rides and saying no to several requests for ice cream throughout the day (and one yes eventually), it was awesome to head back to the ocean view Sheraton and flop ourselves down on our couch in our one bedroom suite!

Mustering up our energy to head back to the lobby and have dinner at the on site restaurant Twenty/20, the kids and I then went back to change into our swimsuits, headed to the pool and soaked our tired legs in the hot tub. An amazing finish to an amazing day.

A great option for those traveling from the north, is the new Metrolink accommodations, including, “boarding a Metrolink train in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino or Ventura Counties destined for Oceanside. Upon arrival, free shuttle transportation delivers guests effortlessly to the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. Included in the package is a two night stay in deluxe accommodations, round trip Metrolink tickets, two Adult LEGOLAND California Hopper Tickets, a complimentary in-room DVD player upon request, and all children under the age of 12 eat for free. Also, if the suite option is out of budget, I spoke to one family who was visiting with three kids from LA that mentioned they love coming down to stay there because the rooms are nice and spacious for their family of five.

As locals, we had a short drive, but felt like we were away and, as a result, nice and relaxed at this gorgeous San Diego resort. Just what the doctor ordered for a perfect Mother’s Day weekend.
