Another School Year Gone By

No crying here, these boys can’t wait for the last day of school!

I don’t measure years in the traditional way–December 31st is not the end of the year for me. Instead, I measure years by school calendars. June is the end of the year, and September marks the beginning of a new one. Those months in between? The X factor–fun months which really don’t count.

So what does the end of the year mean? It means my kiddos are that much older, and as we’ve been heading towards the last day of school (which is today, to be exact), I get weepier. Take yesterday–(...)

Can My Child Walk Home Alone From School?

Growing up, there was a small group of neighborhood kids that I would walk about 3/4 of a mile to the city bus stop, catch the bus together and then walk another 3/4 of a mile to school. Now that I have elementary school age children of my own, I would never let them do the same! Why? Probably because I pay way too much attention to the media. Probably because I know too many stories from friends. Probably because, even when my kids are with me, they STILL forget to look both ways before crossing the street. Knowing that I did it as a child, it almost makes me giggle that I wouldn’t let my own children do the same. Granted, I have the choice. Meaning, I work from home, carpool with a neighbor and can also rely on my husband when needed, who also works from home. This got me thinking: when can a child legally walk home from school alone? What should parents consider beforehand? And, legally, what is the age for a child to be home alone? Breezy Mama turned to legal expert Stacey Honowitz, who is in the Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit with the State Attorney’s Office, to answer these questions.

Uh-Uh, No Way, Not . . . Lice!

The dreaded text came in from one of the mom’s of my child’s classmate, “Lice is going around the classroom!” This is my worst nightmare. Not only have I lived through having lice TWICE as a child (not very fun when one has stick straight, bleached-blonde hair that went to their waist), but I’ve read the horror stories of other moms who have dealt with lice, and have heard tales from teacher friends. Uh-uh, no way. . . I was going to do everything I could to prevent it. Though I was tempted to pull my child out of school, I knew that wouldn’t work. I gave a big speech about not sharing anything–to not exchange hats, to not put heads together, to not eat with anyone at lunch (I kid, I kid), but I knew that I needed more.
