It was quite a treat to be able to take the whole family to the red carpet premiere of Free Birds movie, that opens in theaters November 1. In fact, I have grown accustomed to being able to bring ONE person, so when I was told I could bring the WHOLE family, I wrote back to double check they remembered that meant SEVEN of us. They did. And we were beyond thrilled to watch the movie with the stars! In fact, when Owen Wilson stopped just in front of our seats and was talking with someone in front of my kids, they couldn’t get over that it was “Lightening McQueen” (A.K.A. Cars, the movie)! And the after party was a blast as well, with all you can eat everything, an arcade, a huge slide… it was QUITE the day!
But was the movie good? Well, now Breezy Mama must talk “turkey” about the film that has the birds that go back in time to stop from being the famous Thanksgiving feast. It’s an odd premise, with somewhat of a head scratching plot that’s left me asking, in fact HAD me asking Director/Writer Jimmy Hayward in person, “Are you worried kids won’t want to ever eat turkey again?”
Though he responded, “No, I’m not worried about that. I animated on the first Toy Story, and kids still throw their toys off high places and smash them. Most of your kids probably still smash toys. I’m not too worried about it.
I think it’s natural for characters who want to try and protect themselves in all these types of films. In all the movies that I’ve worked on, it’s insects trying to keep from getting killed, toys trying to keep from getting killed. I think it’s part of the natural obstacles you face in an adventure picture. I think the most important thing for this movie, for me, was to make an entertaining and emotionally resonant film about two characters.”
And the bottom line? My flock loved it. Though at times, my husband and I were thinking, “Huh?” So, it can be nice when the WHOLE family enjoys an entire movie together, but 5 out of 7 ain’t bad. And truth be told, there are laugh out loud moments and always funny to hear Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler’s talents. George Takei as the voice of the time travel “egg” was an added treat as well.
In the end, the movie isn’t exactly gravy, but having those laughs and seeing the film with my kids certainly was.
