I always like to hang the kid’s school projects from previous years. They always get a kick out of it, “I made that when I was 3?!”

My birthday falls at the end of September, so when the celebrations die down, my kids know to start asking about Halloween. This year my son was especially excited for the upcoming holiday. Over and over again, all I heard was, “When can we put up the decorations? When can we put up the decorations?” To which I patiently kept replying, we need to wait until October 1st. You may have noticed that October 1st fell on a Monday this year–which is the day my son and I have an hour together before we pick up my daughter–and you guessed it, he wanted to spend that hour decorating the house. He ran in from school and started pulling open the boxes of decorations, looking for his favorite item, to which we affectionately call “Wild Thing.”

Wild Thing

Side note–Kieran and Wild Thing have a love/hate relationship. My husband actually bought Wild Thing before we were married, and long before thoughts of Kieran were on our mind. Each year, Wild Thing gets pulled out, and now that we have kids, we never know if he’ll stay out. The kids love him, then are scared of him, and then love him again. So far, as I write this on October 8th–he’s been out a full week–a world record.

Kmart’s “Totally GhoulTombstone Kit” arrives.

Beware, it’s Kieran’s Creepy Cemetery!

So now that Wild Thing was found, Kieran was off creating his number one Halloween decorating want–a spooky cemetery. Kieran’s been asking to create a cemetery for weeks now. Kmart made it easy–they had a prepackaged set for only $15.00–so we ordered that and were on our way to a scary front yard. What I was really looking forward to was creating a centerpiece with a gold glittered skeleton head in our entry way–that was my fun project of the season.

My pet project.

Now that the house was ready, we needed to figure out what the kiddos wanted to be for The Big Night. With so many options (Ninja or Fairy? Military or Princess?) it was hard to have the children make ONE choice. Which is where Kmart’s Kreator came in. The tool is awesome. You get to go in, choose your “theme” (i.e. food, superhero, creatures, scary), add your face by uploading your photo, and then you choose all the different accessories to go with it. At the end, not only do you get a hilarious photo of yourself (see below), but you see the closest costume to what you designed that Kmart carries, which is, or course, available at Kmart.

Each year, we build on the last, and with the great items that we have hanging all over the house, I’m already excited to see what Halloween 2013 will bring!
