Check out these ideas from Jenn Ainsworth, of livenUPdesign for adding a pop of color and pattern to your home, baby nursery and child’s bedroom without breaking the bank!
From Jenn:
Sure, you could get a new piece of furniture, go to the trouble of painting a wall or buy a pricey geometric rug to enliven your space and give it a new look. OR you could freshen things up in smaller, less extravagant (but equally as BOLD) ways for the same effect!
Try one (or more) of these ideas to add some fun to your home…
1. Upholstered Cornice Boxes
Adding an upholstered cornice in a fabric that coordinates with the rest of a room is a great way to add a pop of color, pattern and FUN to any space in your home (see photo at top of the popular window framing technique by livenUPdesign). A cornice provides a finished look without appearing fussy and over decorated. It’s also a great way to hide unsightly window covering hardware.
Virtually any fabric will work, but why settle for boring- try to find something unique and lively and that speaks to you personally. There are so many textiles available out there, but I like Spoonflower’s selection – the options are mind-numbing!

2. Change It Up With New PILLOWS
The simplest thing- like changing the throw pillows in a room can completely transform it! If you have neutral bedding, chairs, sofas…it is really easy to change the whole look of the room with different patterns and colors.

4. Embroidery Hoop Wall Art
This looks great in ANY space! An easy DIY project- you can make these hoops for only a few dollars! I recently found some embroidery hoops at a thrift store in various sizes for 20 cents each! You could put any type of material in them- old t-shirts with cute sayings or patterns, vintage pillowcases, pieces of scrap fabric…anything!

5. Re-upholster a small chair you already own (or find one on Craigslist for cheap) with a bright, fun fabric.
Sometimes you don’t have to look too far for inspiration…it may be right under your nose
While this is probably the priciest of all the options, it is definitely one that has the most impact. And if all that needs changing on an existing chair is the fabric- pricing could be as low as $150 from a local upholsterer. That is a small price to pay to transform an entire room!
A recent client of mine had this small armchair (see photo below) in her office that was painted a creamy-yellow and upholstered in a faded cream color fabric…we stained the wood darker and upholstered it in a bold ikat print and VOILA! This ikat chair anchors the room and makes statement worth hearing!!!

Or it could be as simple as new cushions for an existing chair…this yellow chevron retails for less that $10/yard!

Hope these small (yet BOLD) ideas will inspire you to make your home a little bit more lively!
