After starring on the “Must See TV” Will and Grace, Debra Messing is back! This time she pulls out all the stops on NBC’s Smash, the musical drama that gives a behind the scenes glimpse into the world of Broadway. While her character struggles to balance the demands of work and family life, Debra dished with Breezy Mama’s Maya on her 7-year-old son Roman, singing and more.
How would you feel if your son showed an interest in doing something on Broadway?
Oh my goodness… he was Peter Pan last week at school. It was terrifying for me. And he was brilliant.
Would you be nervous if he wanted to be in show business?
Oh my goodness. I told him when he was about two weeks old that I’d already decided that he was going to be an architect. But that’s fine for now… it’s a hobby, but it’s not what Mama chose for him though.
Do you see the drive?
Yeah… He comes to the set and watches everyone sing… he hung out with Bernadette Peters.
Does his dad support him, too?
Oh, absolutely. Everybody. It’s fantastic.
How are you controlling yourself because I imagine you wanting to sing?
It’s hard… it’s really hard.
Have they talked about having you do a song?
I’ve already shot a song. All I can say is I play the lyricist, so the context and the tone of the singing is very different but they have incorporated song into the very dramatic arc of my character in a way that I think is pretty clever.
Does she sing better than Grace [your former character from Will and Grace]?
[Laughs]. Ouch. I can’t say… I leave that to you to decide.
Do you want to continue singing?
I would love it. Are you kidding? The more the merrier.
