Chloe Jo Davis has been guiding Glamazons on the ways to be “green” on her Web site, GirlieGirlArmy.com, for over ten years. As written on the home page, it’s “a call to arms for badass baby divas and head turning cougars, who want to save the planet from hacky sack and doom at the same time.”

Known for spotting trends before they’re trendy, Chloe is now prepping for her shift into motherhood… in less than a month! She took time out from giving her 300,000 monthly readers tips and tricks to tell Breezy Mama the ways her soon-to-be-born son will be living the uber-green life.

From Chloe:

How me and my baby are green:

The first thing I’m going to impart to my Son is that compassion and justice are our keys to life – and by respecting Mama Earth first and foremost, you are making the kindest karmic choice. Religious fundamentalists want to tout tradition as the ultimate, but we are all about values over tradition. And to us, values start with what we put in our tummies. My Husband (Jeremy Davis of Builtbythefactory.com) and I are huge animal lovers and really believe that there is no good reason to consume animals. Therefore, we are both vegans – him more of a junk food vegan and me, more of an organic/ sometimes raw/ always healthy vegan. Going veggie is the #1 thing you can do to help the environment, your body, and the animals. And our little Man will be raised a proud vegan activist. A study conducted by the Institute for Ecological Economy Research concluded that a meat-eater’s diet is responsible for more than 7 times as much greenhouse gas emissions as a vegan’s diet. On average a person switching from the standard American diet to a vegan diet will prevent the abuse and killing of over 100 animals per year. And you save more water by not eating a pound of beef than you do by not showering for an entire year. Now a new United Nations report calls cattle the greatest threat to the climate, forests and wildlife. Cattle are ‘responsible for 18%++ of greenhouse gases, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together.’ This includes the fuel burned making fertilizer, to produce the meat and transport it, as well as the obvious cow fart and manure production of methane, 20 times more effective as a global warmer as CO2. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat, but only 60 gallons to water to produce a pound of wheat! And nearly 10 billion animals raised and slaughtered for food in the U.S. every year. That enough facts for ya kids? The piece de resistance is watching “Peaceable Kingdom” or having knowledge about what really goes on in factory farms. That is nothing me or my family wants to get behind. As Peter Singer says, “All the arguments to prove human superiority cannot shatter this hard fact: in suffering, animals are our equals.” But really – I promise you will feel SO much better if you go veggie – just try it for a few days to see the difference. ;) And read Skinny Bitch: Bun in the oven click here to purchase if you’d like to know how to do veggie while eating for two.

The easiest and simplest ways to GREEN your baby is to:

4. See above!
3. Breastfeed! We all know this, but it bears repeating.
2. Take hand-me-downs – nothing is more eco-licious than recycling and reusing! Plus – think of the $ savings!
1. Register for all eco, organic, sustainable, and enviro-friendly baby goodies. I even wrote a blog about my journey to registering for the most sustainable products: click here. Make sure that you ONLY use products with ingredients you know (i.e. essential oils, castille soaps, lemon, baking powder, etc) OR make your own (click here). And be sure you know what’s spraying on the same floor your little angel will be rolling on! Try and put your little one in as many organic clothes as possible to avoid icky pesticides on his/ her virgin skin – remember even Target has organic onesies now! This isn’t something just for the wealthy and elite! And since people will be buying you presents anyway, register on sites like giggle.com or urthchild.com where almost everything sold is ethical and organic.

She makes strides toward that end each day as the editor-in-chief of GirlieGirlArmy.com, a green guide to glamazon living that boasts more than 300,000 readers. You’ve also seen Chloé as celebrity dirt’s host on RiverWired and in an Errol Morris-directed, national commercial for Silk Soy Milk. Plus, you’ve heard her on the air waves weighing in on the topics that she cares about on a variety of radio shows from Air America to Q102. Chlo_ was honored this year for her Philanthropic Achievements by Pay it Fashion Forward and LL Cool J, and voted an “Ethical Fashion Icon” by VegNews Magazine. The good news is you’ll be hearing a lot more from Chloé as a book on compassionate glamazon living and a television show in development on the same topic are what’s in store for ‘10! You are as likely to see her front row at a fashion show air kissing her famous friends, as leading a demonstration for a cause she’s passionate about… and that darlings, is what a glamazon is all about. Great read! Thanks for sharing this wonderful information. Its always great to hear it again and it puts my efforts in becoming a Vegan into perspective. One sometimes forgets all the positive impact one is making while choosing Tofu instead of poor animals. Great reminder!
