Delish Dish: Greek Cabbage Salad

I recently posted my Grandmother’s chili recipe that I love to cook for occasions when you need to fill a lot of tummies and don’t want to spend much time in the kitchen. What’s always accompanying the chili? This salad. Originally the recipe from two old friends, Breezy Mama Jenny and her twin, Sarah, I always pull it out of my back pocket when I need some greens, quick. –Alex

Breezy Mama Braves the Flames of Kell on Earth's Kelly Cutrone

Remember on The City when Whitney’s boss Kelly at the fashion PR house People’s Revolution asked that uber-skinny model if she was okay and told her she really should eat something? Or all the times Lauren got scolded by Kelly on The Hills? Or the time Kelly made Lauren fire She-Pratt? Juicy! And oh so much fun to watch. Just ask the television station Bravo because they are doing an entire show starting on Monday, Feb 1, based on her called: Kell on Earth. Yep, known first for being a hard core head honcho to Lauren on The Hills and later spending the majority of her time in charge at her NY offices with Whitney in tow, the take-no-prisoners-boss Kelly Cutrone now has her own show that will chronicle just how down and dirty she can be, but also show her life as a single mom. Um, an entire show because she’s gnarly? Um, was I slightly afraid to approach her for an interview? You betcha! Braving the flames of Kell, Breezy Mama got the scoop on her new show, how HER mom feels about her nasty ways, whether we’ll see any The Hills or The City crossovers and more. Read More…

Books for When Siblings Get Sick

This past December, we found out there was another cancerous mass in my daughter (stay tuned for that story). We’ve been on an emotional roller coaster–going back and forth from the hospital, having an unsuccessful surgery, and assuming that she would need chemotherapy. If this journey was filled with highs and lows for my husband and me, you can only wonder what our poor 4-year-old son, Kieran, was going through. “Why is Emily going back to the hospital? Why did her cancer come back? You mean she’s not going to have any hair?” These were all questions that he asked and we struggled to find the right answers. What helped? Books. My friend, Breezy Mama Karina, took it upon herself to research the best books to help explain to Kieran what was happening. Even if your kid doesn’t have cancer, but (heaven forbid) a sibling does get sick, or you’re trying to help out another’s child–turn to one of these. –Alex

Top Drugstore Beauty Finds

Sure, looking good is priceless, but looking good for less is even better! Breezy Mama’s Queen of the Caboodle Kelly put on her drugstore cowgirl hat to do her research for the best low cost picks, with only one item at $20 and the rest under $10 — yeeeehaw!

From Kelly:
A couple of months ago my purse was stolen. As one can imagine, I was upset. Then I realized not only was my purse stolen, but also my entire makeup bag. I was DEVASTATED! Being the beauty junkie that I am, I had accumulated $500-$700 of makeup in that bag. To replenish my treasured beauty amenities I had to take a measly $100 and scour the grocery and drugstores for makeup that would suffice until I am able to afford the items I once purchased at a makeup counter. I was pleasantly surprised to find many comparable items that performed as well if not better than my pricey makeup at a fraction of the price! Here are my new top faves: Read More…

Speech and your Kids: Getting them to Talk and Recognizing a Problem

Reading is one of the most important things you can do to help your child's speech.

There’s nothing like the thrill of hearing your child speak their first word. But what happens if it doesn’t come? Or when it does come, the rest of the speech is incomprehensible? Do you get worried? Or is it normal? Speech Language Therapist Nedra Saunders breaks it all down for us.

Do you have any tips in getting kids to start to talk?
Just remember, once they start you may never get them to stop!  Seriously, kids learn what they experience so the best thing you can do to encourage your child to talk is to provide him with a language rich environment.  In other words talk to him, from the get-go talk, talk, talk.  Talk about what you are doing, for example, “mommy is changing your diaper and oh look your diaper has Winnie the Poo and Tigger too on the back,” and on and on through the whole diaper changing process.  This is “self-talk” and the more you do it the better.  You also want to do “parallel talk” where you verbalize Read More…

Jerry Seinfeld Talks Marriage With Breezy Mama and Why He Feels Men Suffer in Silence

The Seinfelds

It definitely hit me that there I was having some yada, yada, yada with Jerry Seinfeld himself. Before the days of owning my beloved DVR, I always made sure to be home on time to catch his iconic sitcom every single Thursday night. And there were times I actually wanted Elaine’s life. Flash forward from 1998 when Seinfeld went off the air to now, and not only do I have three kids, but Jerry does, too. In fact, he recently celebrated his tenth wedding anniversary with his wife Jessica and has an upcoming reality show that SHE suggested he make. And here’s the catch: it’s based on their petty fights as a long time (yes, ten years is a long time these days) married couple. You may have seen the ads featuring Jerry on NBC, but he actually will not be appearing on The Marriage Ref — that will let couples each tell their side of their argument (nothing to do with the kids or anything serious, more along the lines of, ‘Do you have to keep THAT chair’), but he is a producer and spoke to Breezy Mama on when wedded bliss is a little amiss and more.

What does love mean to you?

Commitment. And that you accept that it’s normal to fight and that it’s even funny. I hear about people who have been married a long time and they Read More…

10 Activities for Rainy Days

Here in Southern California, official headquarters of Breezy Mama, it has rained (almost) nonstop for two days. Now, for those of you who live elsewhere, please do not laugh. For us So Cal people, TWO DAYS of rain is a mighty long time. We’re just not used to it. And the worst thing? It’s supposed to continue for at least three more days. Did I mention it never rains here? As a result, we’ve been forced to batten down the hatches and stay inside and . . . amuse the children. I’m finding that this may not be the easiest thing to do, especially with a certain four-year-old who has an attention span of about ten minutes. In case you’re experiencing the same–whether you, too, are in Southern California, or if you’re stuck in snow, these ideas Read More…

The Truth About Divorce, Protecting Yourself, Your Children and Your Assets

Ironically, Breezy Mama Martha has learned a lot about divorce from being married… to a BIG D attorney. Recently, we were at our three year olds’ sports day and were told about a friend of a friend who is being taken advantage of after her husband decided to leave her and Martha said to me, “You need to tell moms how to protect themselves!” Breezy Mama turned to divorce attorney Jim Ratzer – a.k.a. Martha’s hubby – to get advice for moms either for themselves or to help out a friend who may need it and to our Go-to Psychologist Dr. Gordon Caras to discuss the best approach to take with the kids. Plus, Jenny of Perfectly Disheveled gives her firsthand account on life as a single mom. Read More…

Amy Poehler Tells Breezy Mama Why Her Saturday Nights Aren't So "Live" Anymore

Amy Poehler is one of today’s great comediennes, has paved the way for the next generation of funny women, is an SNL vet, star of hit movies like Baby Mama and is a producer of her TV show Parks and Recreation, but if I’m being honest, when meeting her, it’s hard not to focus on one thing… she’s as cute as a button. Once I got past how petite the blonde hair, big blue-eyed actress is, I discovered she is just as quick witted in person as she is on television and in movies. Answering my Breezy Mama questions including how it was working with her husband in the first episode of the New Year on Parks and Recreation, Amy also shared why life as a mom to her one year old son Archie has made Saturday Night not so “live,” and Read More…
