A funny thing happened to Jenna Fischer when she discovered her character Pam was preggers at the end of last season on The Office. “My sister, Emily, is pregnant in real life and she found out that she was pregnant the same time as Pam,” Jenna told Breezy Mama when asked who she would model herself after. “Emily’s been telling me how she feels. She hasn’t had a lot of morning sickness and neither has Pam, so far, but I think that might change.”
As far as fan reaction since the season finale surprise, Jenna shared, “I’m getting a bunch of mail, [that says] ‘I can’t wait to see you guys have a baby, because we’re expecting,’ and so I feel like we’re sort of growing up with our fans. We’re going through those same life stages as the people who have been watching us from the beginning.”
John Krasinski looks forward to the life-changing event for his character Jim as well. “He’s pretty aware of how great being a father can be … and how scary,” John said.
One of the few actors on the show who has a li’l one currently is Angela Kinsey who, fittingly, plays Angela. While pregnant during season 4, production had to get creative because her character was not expecting. When giving Breezy Mama a tour of the set, she stopped at the copier noting, “This hid most of my pregnancy.”
Timing also helped keep her growing belly out of the camera’s view. “I was pregnant during the majority of the writer’s strike [in 2007/08],” she said. “Once we were back in production, I had already had the baby.”
Her 15-month-old daughter accompanies her to the set along with a nanny and Angela refers to her as The Office’s, “Mascot.”
After the tour, Breezy Mama participated in a Q&A with Jenna, John, Angela, Kate Flannery (Meredith), Oscar Nunez (Oscar), Brian Baumgarnter (Kevin), Phyllis Smith (Phyllis), Lesley David Baker (Stanley), Creed Bratton (Creed), Ellie Kemper (Ellie), Craig Robinson (Darryl), Greg Daniels (Executive Producer), Paul Lieberstein (Toby), Steve Carell (Michael), B.J. Novak (Ryan), Mindy Kaling (Kelly), and Ed Helms (Andy), and got the inside info on what’s ahead when Season 6 begins September 17.
“Pam is going to be walking down the aisle very soon because she is pregnant, but trying to hide that from certain members of her family,” Jenna scooped. “I actually just had a fitting for Pam’s wedding dresses and that was a really special moment.”
Executive Producer Paul Lieberstein –a.k.a. Toby in HR – shared, “We will be going [all] out for the wedding. We’ll meet the family, and it will be fun.”
Regarding the branch boss, Paul dished, “I guess it might be a rough year for Michael Scott. There’s no one on his horizon.”
Speaking of the head of the office, when asked how he plays the man who has zero self awareness, Steve Carell responded, “Even people who are obnoxious and in your face or unlikable to most, I believe that there are other sides and other gray areas to everybody. And I always felt that he was a kind of guy whose intentions were good and his heart was in the right place, but he just has a disconnect socially.”
As far as his personal life, Steve recently bought a 150-year-old general store on the south shore of Massachusetts. “I was there this summer, and we’re redoing the outside,” he shared. “We’re just trying to do enough to keep it standing. It will never make a penny. The reason my wife and I bought it was to preserve it because I grew up with a general store like that which has since closed. My family and my wife’s family are from that area and I just wanted to preserve it as a gathering place for families. It’s a community spot, which I think is important. And they’re few and far between these days.”
Back to the show, one thing that happens often is John’s alter ego, Jim, looking directly into the camera. “It definitely came up in the pilot, and was written into the first few episodes as ‘Jim looks at camera here,’” he shared. “But I somehow convinced them that I can come up with an original one every now and again. So keep those cameras rolling because I might shock you with one of these [gives THE look],” he teased.
The Breezy Mama visit was complete when producer Greg Daniels was asked of the show’s success, “Did you expect it to last this long?” and Steve quipped his character Michael Scott’s oft repeated phrase, “That’s what she said.”
